Dr Kirsten Herbert
Dr Herbert is a specialist Physician in Clinical Haematology. She treats myeloma, lymphoma, leukaemias, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic conditions and non malignant haematological disorders such as bleeding and clotting and iron disorders. She is a member of the Aggressive Lymphoma Tumour Stream, and the Cellular Immunotherapies Team at Peter Mac. She is the Chief Medical Officer of Cell Therapies P/L at Peter Mac. She graduated with Honours from the University of Melbourne in 1998, with her MBBS and a Bachelor of Medical Science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, having trained in Haematology at St Vincent’s Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne.
Dr Herbert has a PhD in Stem Cell Therapy and Translational Research. She is a member of the American, Australian and European Societies of Haematology and Oncology, and a member of the American Society for Bone Marrow Transplantation. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Cancer Council of Victoria Early Career Clinician Researcher Fellowship and the Leukaemia Foundation Max Whiteside Fellowship. She has served as Associate Investigator on a Victorian Cancer Agency Epigenetics Grant. She was Program Leader in Clinical Translation for the Cooperative Research Centre for Cell Therapy Manufacturing.
Dr Herbert serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards of a range of research organizations working towards the clinical development of Cellular Therapies for a wide range of cancers and other disorders. As Clinical Advisor for the Australian Stem Cell Centre, and subsequently with Stem Cells Australia she has an interest in patient advocacy and public education. With colleagues from the National Stem Cell Foundation and Stem Cells Australia, she co-authored the first edition of the Australian Stem Cell Handbook to better inform patients undertaking experimental and unproven therapies in Cellular Therapy. She has a keen interest in teaching of both medical students and advanced trainees in Haematology.
